Years of Service, Miles of Progress
Every March, we look back to our beginnings, because March 13, 1977, is when it all started. With five employees and five trucks, we set out to build a company people could rely on. Back then, the goal was simple: serve our community well, treat customers right, and show up ready to work every single day. That was the standard we set from the start, and it still shapes how we work today.
Our story reaches back even further to 1972, when Steve and Sharon Weil were part of O’Conner-Weil and operated a full-service gas station with three trucks. A few years later, they made the decision to build something of their own. They bought property on Second Avenue South, cleared the land, and built the first Weil Wrecker office and shop. That location served as the heart of our operation for 23 years and gave us the footing we needed to grow.
Growing Across Birmingham and Beyond
As we grew, our footprint grew with us. In 1989, we purchased Pro-Tow in Hoover. In December 2000, we moved just eight blocks from our original site to our current Birmingham location, a step that gave us more room to continue building for the future. From there, we added a second Birmingham location and expanded into Bessemer, and Warrior, allowing us to serve more drivers, businesses, and communities across the region. Each location strengthens our ability to respond quickly while staying connected to the areas we serve.
What Our Fleet Looks Like Today
We’ve grown far beyond those first five trucks. Today, our fleet includes a wide range of vehicles and equipment that allow us to take on everything from light-duty towing to major recovery work.
We also operate dedicated trailers for incident response, hazmat situations, underwater recovery, air cushion recovery work, and other demanding jobs. On top of that, we have a wide range of specialty equipment, including lowboy and detach trailers, skid steers, backhoes, and excavators. Our fleet is current and ready for the work in front of us.
A Larger Team
Our growth has allowed us to serve more people while holding onto the values that helped us get started. From five employees in 1977 to around 150 team members today, the scale has changed in a big way. Steve and Sharon Weil could not have imagined 49 years ago that the company would grow to this size, with more than 105 power units, adding to a total of over 150 pieces of equipment in the fleet, and multiple operating locations. Even so, they still come in every day to help make sure the company continues to run with the same care and attention it had from the start.
Weil Wrecker Keeps Service at the Center
At Weil Wrecker, growth has never been the whole story. What matters most to us is how we serve people across Birmingham, Bessemer, Brookside, Hayden, Homewood, Hoover, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Tarrant, Warrior, and the surrounding areas. Our work has changed in scale, and our fleet has grown far beyond its early years, but the purpose behind it still feels familiar. After 49 years, we still show up, do the job well, and take care of the customer in front of us.
